Affects of Divorce on Children: Profiling Christy Brinkley’s Divorce

Earlier this week Christy Brinkley’s divorce finally reached a settlement. I thought that this particular celebrity divorce case was important to look at here because of the outcome and the reactions by both parties. As you know, the focus of this blog is to help couples work together to do what is right for their kids and to keep their family unit in tact, and it is important that dialogues be started about the examples celebrities are giving to parents of all ages.

The affects of divorce on children are determined mainly by how the parents act and react during the divorce process. In the case of the Brinkley divorce I was shocked at the remarks made by each of the parties. Ms. Brinkly’s focus throughout the divorce process from her husband was to gain custody of their children. Her remarks focused always on her love for the children and that she wanted what is best for them, however, the husband’s remarks always seemed to be focused on getting property and money from the dissolution of the marriage.

Child custody in divorce is never an easy issue to settle. However, when one parent is more concerned about money than their children they can sometimes hold up the process and put more stress on their family. In order to protect your kids and to keep the divorce process from destroying your family unit, both parenting partners need to focus on the children and divorcefirst and money second.

Building kids’ self esteem is important to do during a divorce, especially when there are conflicts over child custody. However, keeping kids out of the firing line, keeping them informed about what is going on and spending quality time with them will all help this process and help prevent negative long term effects from developing.
