Children and Divorce: Q and A Sessions With Your Kids

Divorce is a confusion time. I know from personal experience that everyone in your life is going to have questions about your divorce. They will ask you why you are getting divorce, have you tried working things out, who is getting the house and who is getting custody. While you can avoid answering most people’s questions about your divorce if you want to, it is important that you do not sweep the questions your kids have about your divorce under the carpet.

During my divorce I tried to keep my son informed about all the changes that were going on. He was only three at the time so he didn’t have many questions. But I feel that he was more comfortable with changes as long as I told him about them before hand. Now that he is twelve, I found that he has more questions about the divorce. This was something I hadn’t planned for. However, while I hoped that I had answered my last question about my divorce nine years ago, I have remained open to answering every question that he has as openly as I can.

As a divorcing parent or a divorced parent, Q and A sessions with your kids are important. These sessions not only keep your family communicating and working together, but they also help your kids to adjust positively to being a child of divorce as they grow and mature. When answering questions it is important to remain as neutral as possible. Try not to provide too many gruesome details or emotional turmoil, but instead focus on the facts of your divorce. Also format your answers so that it is appropriate for the age of your child and keep things simple and clean. (I know that divorce is neither simply nor clean, but your answers need to be to protect your kids from distress.)

Learning how to minimize the effects of divorce on children is the first step for helping your children cope with divorce. To access more information on children and divorce visit Children and Divorce each week!
