Divorcing During the Holidays a Bad Idea

No one wants to get divorced during the holidays, however, during the last two months of the year divorce rates sky rocket. The reason for this is because these are two of the most stressful months of the year. Not only are you trying to deal with covering rising energy bills, but you are also struggling to cover your holiday expenses and family commitments. As a result of all of these stressors many couples that are struggling, surrender and pull the trigger on their divorce intents.

If at all possible, avoid filing for divorce during the holiday season. I recommend this because the emotional stress that you are already in during the holiday season will amplify all of your divorce related stresses. This means that every bad emotion that you have, all the frustration that you have and all of your interactions are going to feel two to three times worse then they have to.

If you can’t avoid divorcing during the holiday season then make sure that you take steps to preserve your mental and emotional stress, as well as the mental and emotional stress of your children. For example, you can seek counseling, you can exercise, you can find a support group to join and you can spend time with close friends. To help your kids deal with the trauma of divorce during the holidays you can focus on creating a family atmosphere in your households to ensure that they are still able to celebrate the holiday instead of focusing exclusively on the divorce. Keeping things amiable between you and your soon-to-be ex-spouse can also help to preserve the holidays as a pleasant memory for your kids.

The effects of divorce on children are going to happen whether you get divorced during the holiday season or some other time of the year. The key to minimizing the affects of divorce on children is knowing how to make better parenting choices. Find parenting tips at Children and Divorce.
