Divorce and the Environment

The focus of most of my blogs are how you can change your behaviors during and after a divorce. Today’s blog is no different, but I want to migrate away from behaviors that have a direct impact on your kids during and after a divorce, to behaviors that have an indirect impact on your kids. If you read the headlines last week, you may have come across an article on how the high rate of divorce is impacting the environment. This is the issue that I want to talk about this week.

It has been estimated that divorced families pay $10.5 billion more in utilities and water then they would if they remained married. This figure is based on the fact that families that have divorced occupy two households instead of one. While divorce is rarely avoidable for many couples, it is creating a situation where people are consuming more energy, water and resources per person.

If you think about it, it makes sense that two households consume more energy. However, you may not realize that the fewer people in your household the more expensive energy and water is per person. This is because you use the same amount of energy to heat and cool a 1200 square foot home for two people, four people or one person.

Children of divorce both inspire changes in your life and your lifestyle. Because of this you need to learn what children and divorced parents can do to minimize both the affects of divorce on children and on the environment.
