Over the next few months the snow is going to blow and the weather is going to be wintery. I have learned that during these colder months when the kids are cooped up inside, that they need something to keep them busy. If you are a part of a divorced family then this is the ideal time to show your interest in what your kids are doing in school and to supplement what they are learning at home. This will not only help your child do better in school, but it will also help to improve your relationship with them.
There are a lot of projects that you complete with your kids at home. You can work together on a science experiment, you can read books together or you can work together on a special home project such as building a new home entertainment center. The point of these joint projects is to spend time with your kids and to let them know that you love and support them.
In addition to showing your interest in their school work at home, it is also important to show up and support them at school. Whether it is a basketball game, open house or field trip, if you can be there, be there. If you get along with your former spouse then try to make school events family events where both parents show up. However, if you are still working your way through negative feelings about your former spouse then make arrangements so that at least one of you is at each school event.
Working your way through the challenges created by mixing children and divorce together takes some ingenuity. However, once you learn a few simple strategies you will be able to improve the affects of divorce on children and help your children cope with divorce in a much better manner.
