Building Kids Self-Esteem: Rope Course Family Challenges

Building kids’ self esteem before, during and after a divorce is very important to do. This is because a healthy sense of self-worth will help your kids to deal more effectively with the changes that are being made in your household. It will also help them to make other adjustments in their lives, such as transitioning from grade school to high school or from high school to college, go more smoothly. One fun way to build your kids’ self esteem is to take them to a rope course or climbing wall and spend the day together.

The purpose of rope courses is to develop team work and to develop self confidence. Because of the nature of this family challenge, it is best suited for families that have kids that are old enough to meet the age requirements for the course, however, kids as young as nine or ten can usually handle basic rope course with the proper equipment and supervision. Children and divorced parents strengthen their relationships as they work their way through the course by learning how to work together, trust one another and to communicate effectively.

The best way to prepare for a family rope course challenge is to first learn about the course you will be using. A lot of community centers and recreation centers now offer rope courses. However, you may need to do a little traveling to find one near your house. Next, learn about the safety equipment that will be used like harnesses and helmets. Finally, develop your family game plan. For example, talk about how to communicate during the event and how to single when one member of the family needs a little extra help.
