During the month of April we talked about starting new traditions with your kids. Today I would like to conclude this discussion by talking about Arbor Day, which is today, celebrations. Arbor Day is traditionally a day that celebrates trees and rebirth. A perfect theme for any family of divorce.
There are several Arbor Day activities that you can do with your kids. The first is to spend the afternoon planting trees in your yard. Since we are at the end of April, the ground should be soft enough to excavate. However, before you start digging you need to identify where your utilities are located. Once the utility lines are marked you can select a tree that is appropriate for your growing zone and plant it in your yard. Remember to dig the hole big enough for the root ball to expand and relax. Finally, give your newly planted trees a lot of fresh water.
Another fun Arbor Day activity is to join in a community planting project. If you live in an area that is logged, then you can help replenish what has been harvested by clearing the harvested field and planting a new generation of trees. You can get baby trees from a local nursery, from the Forest Service, or you can plant and raise them at your own house. In most cases the community project is going to provide you with the trees, planting instructions and the tools your family needs to plant them. However, if you have small kids, then you may want to bring kid sized tools with you.
