One responsibility that you have as a divorcing parents is to adjust your children’s environments to make them more supportive and responsive to their emotional, psychological, and physical needs. One of the environments that you will need to adjust when you divorce is your child’s school environment. It is a good idea to schedule a meeting with your child’s school teacher and the school counselor when you start divorce proceedings. At this meeting let the teacher and counselor know that you are getting a divorce and that you are worried about how your child will handle the change. The teacher can help you by telling you when they notice behavior changes or if the child’s school work starts to suffer. The school’s counselor can help you by providing you with information on how to make the adjustments at home easier to handle, and they can also work with your child to help them work out their feelings about the situation.

Divorcing parents responsibilities also include keeping the family unit together. When you divorce it is easy to allow the family unit to fragment. However, if you make a conscious effort to work with your ex-spouse to raise your children together then you can create a more secure and functional environment for your children to grow up in. This joint effort will not only create a healthier environment for your kids to grow up in, but it will also provide them with a positive model for dealing with difficult situations and future relationships.

If you have young children then your divorcing parents responsibilities will focus on maintaining routines and allowing the children to spend quality time with each parent. Creating relaxed home environments that are free of emotional stress is also important. This can be accomplished by working with your ex-spouse to create a set of guidelines for parenting activities and strategies and a set of guidelines that will allow you to work peacefully with each other.

If you are the parents of teenagers then your divorcing parents responsibilities need to focus on encouraging emotional stability. Adolescents are very susceptible to emotional illnesses caused by extra stress at home. To reduce these stressors you need to provide your teen with unconditional love, a set of rules that are applicable to both mom’s home and dad’s home and consistent parenting strategies. Reducing arguments between parents is also important. Your parenting plan can help you to meet your parenting responsibilities and to reduce the amount and severity of parental arguments by outlining mediation methods and acceptable ways to resolve disagreements.
