Understanding the Effect Divorce has on Children

While there are many short term effects of divorce on children, it is the long-term effect that divorce has on children that parents sometimes fail to deal with. When a family gets divorced, they reduce the amount of money that each parent has to live on and it increases the living expenses that each has. Both of these changes make it difficult for divorced families to recover fully after a divorce; they also create a multitude of problems regarding children and divorce. Some of the problems that develop as a result of tighter financing include a lack of insurance, reduced resources for higher education and reduced time to spend with each other.

Changes to your finances are going to initiate a lot of changes in your family's life. Some of the problems that divorce induced financial changes can create include: not having as much expendable income as you once did, having a difficult time affording the necessities, and not being able to spend as much time with your kids as you once did because you now have to work more to meet end’s meat. All of these changes are going to impact your family's life. You can help your family deal positively with the financial effect divorce has on children by making a solid effort to work together as a family. For example, the household chores can be split up between everyone in the house to reduce the stress that anyone person in the family has to deal with.

Another way to deal with the financial impacts that divorce has on a family is to learn how to budget. Budgeting can be a great way to identify new financial resources and a great way to identify items that you can save money on. You can involve your kids in the budgeting process to make them feel like they are an important part of the family, and to help them learn how to create and live by a budget.

While there are several negative effects divorce has on children, there are also a few positive effects that can be generated from a divorce as well. First of all divorce gives parents and children after divorce the opportunity to create a new relationship with each other. This new relationship can be based on valuing the time that you spend with each other and appreciating the differences and similarities that you have.

Another positive effect that can be generated from a divorce is that it provides your kids with the opportunity to explore their own strengths and weaknesses. Many counselors who work with kids of divorce are going to focus their sessions on identifying and dealing with emotions and fears. While the circumstances under which the kids learn this skill is not ideal, it does provide them with amazing coping skills that they can use throughout their lives.

The last positive effect that can precipitate from a divorce is a stronger family unit. While married you may have spent a lot of your time fighting with your now-ex-spouse. Now that the marriage has been dissolved you have the opportunity to establish a more functional relationship with your former spouse, and you also have the opportunity to re-structure your family unit and create a system that focuses on love, support and togetherness.
